Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley

Kiwanis plans three Music in the Park events at Skypark this summer.

The first of the free concerts will feature Mike Hadley and the Groove from 4 to 7 p.m. June 27. Food and drinks will be sold to support local charities, schools and scholarships.

Other shows will be The House Rockers on July 25 and Extra Large on Aug. 29.

Kiwanis hopes to find sponsors for concerts. Already participating are the Scotts Valley Arts Commission, Diane Bianconi Enterprises, Scotts Valley Art Advocates, Santa Cruz Pizza Co., Roudon-Smith Winery and BCI Construction.

The Kiwanis Club meets at 7 a.m. Wednesdays at Heavenly Café, 1270 Mount Hermon Road, except the second Wednesday of the month, which is a 6 p.m. meeting at the Hilton Santa Cruz-Scotts Valley, 6001 La Madrona Drive. Cost is $5 for morning meetings, $20 for evening meetings.

San Lorenzo Valley Rotary

The San Lorenzo Valley Rotary Club hosted the Area 7 Rotary Club’s speech contest at Felton Community Hall on March 10. The winner was Rodrigo Plaza from Soquel High School, who was sponsored by Santa Cruz Rotary. He advanced to the Regional speech contest March 23 in Los Gatos.

April speakers: April 7, Robert Hallbauer, on 2-1-1; April 14, Danielle Moreno, on CASA; April 21, Keith Henderson from Shelter Box; and April 28, Julie Haff, on education in the San Lorenzo Valley.

SLV Rotary meets at 7:15 a.m. Wednesdays in the Birch Dining Room on Conference Drive at the Mount Hermon Conference Center. Cost is $10.

Scotts Valley Host Lions Club

The club served more than 300 guests at its 40th annual crab cioppino feed and dance March 13. The club thanks those who worked at the event, donated items and attended the dinner-dance.

The club had its zone-level student speaker contest March 15, and the speaker went on to the next level.

The Host Lions meet at the Scotts Valley Senior Center, 370 Kings Village Road, at 7 a.m. Tuesdays, with the exception of the second Tuesday of each month, when the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Santa Cruz Moose Lodge 545

The lodge is sponsoring the Scotts Valley Little League T-ball team, Express, for the 2010 baseball season. The lodge also bought a sign to be displayed on the Majors field.

The lodge was recently re-established in the Adopt-a-Highway program. Starting in April, members will be responsible for cleanup duties at the southbound Pasatiempo exit and the Park and Ride area off Highway 17.

Moose 545 continues to support Boy Scout Troop 676, which had its bridging ceremony at the lodge. The ceremony represents the journey from Cub Scout to Boy Scout.

A fundraiser for Haitian earthquake relief took place in February. Money raised from a raffle, dessert sales and a tip jar was sent to the American Red Cross.

The lodge continues to help Meals on Wheels, Valley Churches United Mission and Mooseheart charities.

Scotts Valley Rotary

Thirty-five years ago this month, the Scotts Valley Rotary Club was founded, and its members celebrated at their March 15 meeting with balloons, special music, ice cream and cake.

The Rotarians continue to have unique programs every week, like this week’s talk by Michelle Chappel, a psychology professor turned singer-songwriter.

The club continues to raise money for shelter boxes for Haiti earthquake victims, and it also is planning its third Save Our Shores beach cleanup and a Helping Hands Project for seniors. The club’s ice hockey team is going to playoffs, too.

Rotary will help host a Food for Children collection for the Second Harvest Food Bank on Saturday, March 27. The collection will be from noon to 4 p.m. at the Scotts Valley and Ben Lomond markets.

The club meets from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Mondays at the Hilton Santa Cruz-Scotts Valley, 6001 La Madrona Drive. Lunch begins at noon and costs $16.
