Letter: No More School Taxes

I have owned property in different areas of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties for 28 years. I currently own property in Scotts Valley. The school taxes are overwhelming. I currently pay over $1,000 year in property taxes just for schools, and now we are faced with yet another school tax (Measure A) that would cost me another $300/year or more in school taxes. To top it off, our kids are grown and gone. By the way, what happened to the California Lottery school funding?

According to Penny Weaver, superintendent of Scotts Valley Unified School District, “the actual tax rates and the years in which they will apply may vary from those presently estimated, due to variations from these estimates in the timing of bond sales, the amount of bonds sold and market interest rates at the time of each sale, and actual assessed valuations over the term of repayment of the bonds.”

So, in other words, the school district is not even sure of the actual amount of taxes we are voting on. It sounds to me like there are no limits to what this new property tax could end up being. That is like voting to give the school district a blank check that the property owners of Scotts Valley are going to have to cash. This is another school tax we can’t afford! All renters that think this is good thing, their kids get to go to top-notch schools and the cost will be shouldered by the property owners, think again. When property tax goes up, rents go up! I urge everyone to VOTE NO ON MEASURE A.

"Anti-community"? Because someone thinks differently than you? We left SV several years ago after living there for many many years.....one of the biggest reasons is because of the systematic, and systemic, failure of the school district. And for the small minded-ness expressed here by some. SVUSD, along with the Soquel district, spend huge piles of money in attorneys fees to fight providing all children with appropriate educations....so sad.

Susie - thanks for coming, but thanks even more for going. It's absolutely hilarious that someone who was here for a few years thinks that she can judge our community. If you think our school district is failing our youth, you're definitely not paying attention. Our schools are winning awards. Thanks for your contribution, but thanks even more for heading down the road.

Any more haters?

Please reread what I wrote.....slowly. We lived there for MANY years. Obviously, you are "right", not only for yourself but everyone else in the entire community......good for you. The ability to see the world from different perspectives is called maturity.....and maturity comes not from simply getting older, but from growth through lessons learned, compassion and not having to be right for everyone else.....
